what happens to the carbon dioxide you produce

Why Is Carbon Of import?

Why are they chosen fossil fuels?

They're chosen fossil fuels because the fuel in your gas tank comes from the chemic remains of prehistoric plants and animals!

All living things on World contain carbon. Even you contain carbon. Lots of it. If y'all weigh 100 pounds, 18 pounds of y'all is pure carbon! And plants are almost half carbon!

Cartoon of boy, with big pile of black stuff next to him. Cartoon tree, with even bigger pile of black stuff next to it.

You lot are 18 percent carbon. Plants are 45 percent carbon.

With and so much carbon, why isn't everything black and sooty? How can dogs exist white and copse green? Because carbon, an chemical element, combines easily with other elements to course new materials. The new stuff, called compounds, are quite unlike from pure carbon.

An atom is the tiniest possible particle of any element, similar carbon or oxygen. A carbon atom combines easily with 2 oxygen atoms to make the chemical compound carbon dioxide.

"C" stands for carbon, "O" stands for oxygen, so carbon dioxide is often called "C-O-2, and written "COii." COii is a gas. It is invisible. COii is really important.

Read on to acquire how carbon gets into living things in the kickoff place.

How does carbon become into living things?

Carbon in, water and oxygen out!

Carbon dioxide in, h2o and oxygen out.

Plants take in CO2. They keep the carbon and give away the oxygen. Animals exhale in the oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

Plants and animals depend on each other. Information technology works out well. For hundreds of millions of years, plants and animals have lived and died. Their remains have gotten buried deep beneath Earth'southward surface. So for hundreds of millions of years, this material has been getting squished and cooked by lots of pressure and heat.

Three drawings: Before the dinosaurs, many plants died in swamps. Over millions of years, the plants were buried under water and dirt. Heat and pressure turned the dead plants and animals into coal.

For hundreds of millions of years, dead plants and animals were buried under water and dirt. Oestrus and pressure turned the dead plants and animals into oil, coal, and natural gas.

So what happens to all this dead plant and brute stuff? It turns into what we call fossil fuels: oil, coal, and natural gas. This is the stuff we now employ to energize our world. We burn these carbon-rich materials in cars, trucks, planes, trains, power plants, heaters, speed boats, barbecues, and many other things that require free energy.

How does the carbon get out of living things?

Cartoon showing water and carbon dioxide clouds coming out of a car's tailpipe, and heat coming off the hood.

When fossil fuels fire, we mostly get three things: heat, water, and CO2. We besides get some solid forms of carbon, like soot and grease.

So that'south where all the old carbon goes. All that carbon stored in all those plants and animals over hundreds of millions of years is getting pumped back into the atmosphere over just i or ii hundred years.

Did you know that called-for vi.three pounds of gasoline produces 20 pounds of carbon dioxide? Want to know how?

Is carbon in the air good, bad, or just ugly??

A greenhouse traps the Sunday's energy inside and keeps the plants warm.

Here's the big, of import thing about CO2: It'due south a greenhouse gas. That means COtwo in the atmosphere works to trap heat shut to World. It helps Globe to hold on to some of the energy it gets from the Sun then the energy doesn't all leak back out into infinite.

If it weren't for this greenhouse effect, Globe's oceans would exist frozen solid. Earth would not exist the beautiful blue and greenish planet of life that it is.

Oceans would freeze and Earth would no longer be beautiful.

If non for the greenhouse effect, World would be an ice brawl.

So, COtwo and other greenhouse gases are skillful—up to a point. But COii is so proficient at holding in rut from the Sun, that fifty-fifty a small-scale increment in CO2 in the atmosphere can cause World to get even warmer.

Throughout Earth's history, whenever the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has gone upwards, the temperature of World has as well gone up. And when the temperature goes upward, the CO2 in the atmosphere goes upwards even more.
